PANAJI: Director general of police Jaspal Singh has directed police to take up the work of verification of labourers at all construction sites in Goa. He said that Goa police should draw up a list of suspected “habitual burglars”, and individual police stations will be asked to act against them.The DGP’s move comes in the aftermath of the recent rape and murder of a five-year-old girl in Vasco, allegedly by labourers. “In view of this, extensive verification of labour at construction sites should be carried out, and even contractors should be sensitised to get police verification of their labour force done,” Singh told police.A law and order meeting was held at the police headquarters in Panaji. During the meeting, Singh reviewed the data regarding disposal of cases, as well as progress of pending cases. He also discussed the issue of rising property offences, particularly burglaries. After the discussion, Singh issued various directions to police.Singh also directed cops to conduct regular patrolling in affected areas in uniform, day and night.“Extensive use of the national automated fingerprint identification system should be made to ascertain previous involvement of arrested criminals, and to update the crime record,” Singh said. “Motorcycles with sirens/flashers should be activated, and night patrolling should be more effective,” he added.The DGP also directed police station in-charges to conduct audits of staff posted at police stations to ascertain if duties are fairly distributed by the duty master. “Beat officers must wear their uniform and remain present in their beats,” Singh said.District superintendents of police (SP) should coordinate with the SP (crime branch) to establish a modus operandi bureau in the crime branch. The DGP said that the criteria for effectiveness of district SPs would be whether they are able to galvanise night patrolling and the beat system.Goa police also held a meeting with their Karnataka counterparts in Belagavi.
